Iris Apfel’s Life and Career
Iris Apfel began her career by writing for Women’s Wear Daily and working as an interior decorator. In 1950, she founded a textile firm called Old World Weavers with her husband, Carl Apfel. The company produced fabric designs inspired by centuries-old patterns, which were used in the White House by nine American presidents from Truman to Bill Clinton.
Transformation into a Fashion Icon
Apfel’s transformation into a fashion icon began with the exhibition “Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Apfel Collection” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005. This exhibition marked the museum’s first show dedicated to a living individual who was not a designer and received widespread acclaim.
Creative Collaborations and Awards
Throughout her career, Apfel collaborated with many notable brands and designers. In 2018, she was honored with a Barbie doll created in her likeness by Mattel. Additionally, she received numerous awards for her contributions to the fashion industry, including the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Pioneer Award at the United Nations.

Despite passing away at the age of 102, Apfel left behind an unforgettable legacy with her unique style, creativity, and contributions to the fashion world. Her bold and original approach to fashion continues to inspire future generations. (She passed away on March 1, 2024, at her home in Palm Beach, Florida)
